¡ã Buddhist Figures of Dudae-ri
|
The
commanding grand Buddhist triad stands at the mountain
in the rear of Dudae-ri.
It
consists of a 2.5 meter-high main Buddha and
has minor Buddha on both sides.
It
was created in the mid-8th century, the high-point
in Silla history.
Forty
tombs of various sizes are scattered throughout
the village.
According
to legend, a mystic golden ruler that can bring
the dead back to life is hidden in one the tombs.

¡ãTomb of Kim In-mun
|
The
Seoakseowon Confucian School, located north of the
tomb of King Taejongmuyeol, is memorial hall
to three sages: Kim Yu-sin, Seol Chong and
Choi Chi-won.
It was built in 1563 and was named by Toegye, a
great Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty.
It was destroyed in a war during the Joseon Dynasty
and was rebuilt in 1600 and 1610 and was officially
named in 1623.
Letters, written by Won Jin-hae, a master calligrapher
of the Joseon Dynasty, are hung inside the
hall.

This tomb located at the foot
of Mt. Songhwasan, west of Gyeongju.
Having
made great contributions to the unification of
the three main kingdoms of Korea, General Kim was posthumously
awarded the honorary title of King Heungmu, and
was buried in a tomb as splendid as that of kings.
The tomb is encircled with stone lions and stone
rails, engraved with the twelve animal figures
of Oriental zodiac.

¡ãTomb of King Taejongmuyeol
|
At
the of Mt. Seondosan, south of Mt. Songwasan, is
the tomb of King Taejongmuyeol, who paved the way
for he unification of the three kingdoms.
Across the street are the tombs of Kim In-mun and
Kim Yang, diplomats of that time, facing each
other.
The pedestal and capstone of the tomb of King Taejongmuyeol
are sculptures that seem to be alive; they bring
to us the spirit of Silla.

Mt.
Danseoksan stands 827 meters high in Sannae-myeon, near
Gyeongju.
According
to legend, General Kim Yu-sin, taught
the secrets of martial arts by a monk, cut a rock
in half with his sword with one slash.
After that time, it was known as Danseoksan(Cut
Rock Mountain).
This mountain is famous
for a relief of Buddha at Sinseonsa Temple. It is
national treasure number 199 and is known as
the first grotto of Silla. |
